Over the past years, we have received multiple requests to develop an exam for the Virtual Hacking Labs PT01 Penetration Testing Course. As it has become increasingly important today to validate skills that prove an individual’s ability to properly assess, exploit, and secure complex systems we have finally developed a new Penetration Testing Exam.

The exam is designed for professionals and aspiring professionals who have been working through the Virtual Hacking Labs platform and are ready to take the next step in validating their penetration testing skills. More than just a test, the VHL CPT-01 exam is a challenging, hands-on assessment that mirrors real-world scenarios and provides a valuable learning experience, rather than relying on theoretical, multiple-choice questions.

VHL CPT-01 Exam overview

The Certified Penetration Tester (CPT-01) exam is a performance-based certification that focuses on demonstrating the ability to identify, exploit, and document vulnerabilities in a controlled environment. It builds directly on the experience gained inside the Virtual Hacking Labs, where students have already tested their skills against a wide range of realistic systems. In addition, the exam also measures adaptability by including challenging components that may push candidates into unfamiliar territory. The scoring system takes this into account, ensuring that while adaptability is tested, students are not penalized unfairly for stepping into new ground.

Unlike traditional certifications, the VHL CPT-01 exam emphasizes real-world, hands-on proficiency. Candidates will work in an online lab environment with multiple targets that simulate real world targets. The objectives of the exam are to identify vulnerabilities, exploit them and document findings in a structured and professional way.

The exam is aligned with the level of knowledge and skills demonstrated by completing the standard Certificate of Completion and the Advanced+ VHL Certificate of Completion.

VHL CPT-01 Exam structure

  • A multi-machine lab environment simulating real-world scenarios and applications.
  • Exploitation challenges requiring reconnaissance, exploiting vulnerabilities, privilege escalation, manual exploitation techniques and diving into potentially unfamiliar territory.
  • Time-limited access as candidates will have 72 hours to complete the exam lab machines, which should provide enough time to work through the challenges.
  • A professional report submission, demonstrating not only technical skills but also communication skills.

The focus will be on identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities, applying structured penetration testing methodologies and documenting findings in a professional manner.
